In an urban city where everything moves fast we are somehow following its rushed rhythms and forget to breath. We become scheduled machines of the city. Each one of us follows his own program. We wake up early, wash our face, eat, get in the car, go to work, leave, go home, feed the fish, take the dog for a walk, go to the gym, surf in the internet and sleep. And our live goes on like that. We do not listen to the sounds of the city we just hear noise. The birds are barely heard to us. Our ears are shut from anger, stress, frustration, exhaustion and we do not let them “fly” free. Birds are there to remind us to sing or whisper and “fly”. The performance will show in a humorous way, the tactic people should take on for opening their ears and building wings to fly.
10. Poppy Aristidou & Maria Chrystoforou Presenting Conversations With A Drum
How many times do you wish that someone is around to give you the answer/solution to a certain question/situation? You may find this, through the interaction between the narrator and the drum. To begin with, you act as an observer. Gradually, through the journey... you become an active participant; you slowly start to associate yourself with the narrator. The conversations with the drum work as a means of catharsis of the human soul.
11. Joao Teigas presenting Trashscape Art “Combining both their physical origins and the cultural overlay of human presence, often created over millennia, landscapes reflect the living synthesis of people and place vital to local and national identity. Landscapes, their character and quality, help define the self image of a region, its sense of place that differentiates it from other regions. It is the dynamic backdrop to people’s live.” – source: Wikipedia Departing from the above definition of Landscape the collective of people that will gather in this project, propose a constructive research on a new definition: TRASHSCAPE ART. Our current landscapes are reflecting a less positive side of human nature: our inability to re-use objects that we considered obsolete. The reflection is the trash that populates the cities. These metaphorical vagabonds are lying in our cities, seating on our curbs, sleeping in some empty plot, climbing some steeped hills or getting warmer next to the trash bin. We see them every day and we ignored them every day. Our collective of “Trashscapers” will reclaim part of these elements with the goal of re-introducing them in society again. Even if the object function became obsolete, a more thorough look will unveil a possible re-use, a new function, a piece of art or just wood, glass, plastic, hinges, handles, screws, nails, etc. that can be re-used with a different purpose. We would like to participate in the PUSF 2010 because we believe in its motifs to raise awareness of an emergent art/cultural/social scene in Cyprus. It’s in the awareness subject that we would like to introduce our idea by providing some answers but mainly raising a lot of questions. We want to build in an area on the festival venue, a main public space or smaller spaces made of unwanted materials/objects collect in Nicosia. This space or spaces will have the primary function of providing public amenities, instigating a creative debate on the different possibilities of re-using.
